    • Engage

    Changing the World

    • Reflect and Connect
    Steps:

Work by yourself to answer the following questions in your technology notebook.

    1. What did you find most interesting about the stories in the Siemens Challenge?

    2. What environmental issue is most important to you? Explain why you care about that issue.

    Answers to Reflect and Connect

Students should work on the Reflect and Connect questions individually, recording their answers in their technology notebooks. You may wish to hold a discussion about some or all of the questions once students have had an opportunity to reflect.

    1. What did you find most interesting about the stories in the Siemens Challenge?

Student answers will vary. Some students will find more general interests, such as the idea that middle school students were able to cause a change in their communities. Other students will pick out specific interests, such as a particular environmental issue that a team worked on or the way a team addressed a concern.

    2. What environmental issue is most important to you? Explain why you care about that issue.

Research has shown that making concepts relevant to students increases motivation and interest in the concept. This question is meant to help students think about what they care about related to environmental issues. Accept any reasonable answer in which students explain their ideas. Some students may feel that their answers to this question are personal, so do not force any student to share their answers aloud in a class discussion. You might ask if any students are interested in sharing their answers, however.
