    Answers to Reflect and Connect

Allow students time to answer these questions. Once they have had time to complete the questions, you may want to hold a class discussion on some or all of them.

    1. What types of places do you think have air that is the most polluted? The least polluted? Explain your answers.

This question is meant to help students think about what causes air pollution. If they have experience in a large city, they may realize that cities have a lot of air pollution. They may also realize the corollary and say that very remote places are not very polluted. Accept any reasonable answer at this point in the instructional model.

    2. Can you think of any technologies that help reduce air pollution? These might be technologies that you or your family use or technologies that big companies use.

Students’ answers will vary. Some of the things that they may be aware of include furnace filters, HEPA filters on vacuum cleaners, or even hybrid cars. They may remember the scrubbers that are put on incinerators, which they learned about in Chapter 1.

Can you remember a technology from Chapter 1 that helps reduce air pollution?
